1 Sentence Summary: Bree, Nick, William, Selwyn…omg just read it.
My Thoughts:
Not going to lie, when I saw this was almost 700 pages I almost hesitated to pick this up. Despite being desperate to know what happened after Bloodmarked. Tracy Deonn, however, was ready to deliver. I do not know how she just delivers on 3 straight bangers in a row. Despite the length, the pacing is really well done , thanks to the introduction of multiple POVs. We get new unique perspectives from Nick, William, and Natasia (Sel’s Mother). In addition we get a whole bunch of new characters added to the cast and discover so much more about Bree’s world.
With this, we get to see Nick and Wiliam really develop as allies to Bree. There is a quote from Wiliam that has stuck with me since I read this back in March. It was confronting in the best way. I’ve heard the question, “how do I be a better ally?” a lot. But the truth is the emotional labor of that answer has already been done by so many. The best thing about reading Black fiction is getting a first hand account of how we can show up to do the work.
This is William’s POV as Nick is confronting the Order
“ ‘I’m Not done!’ Nick roars back ‘And I wasn’t just talking to you’ Nick turns to the room, to the other Scions and Squires, to the Lieges up above. ‘We have to know these sins. We have to name them. Not only in Bree’s presence’— at this, Nick looks at the Southern Chapter, at me—’but name them in her absence, too.”
“A fuill-chested wave of immobolizing shame swamps me. DId I ever name the forces that Bree faces? Did I ever call them what they were, full voiced in front of her? Or di dI hope she swould know my heart without seeing me declare it before others? I drop my head. If I cannot recall the facts of my own words, the I cannot expect her to.”
⚠️vERY LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD⚠️
This little romance had me kicking my kicking my feet. I think one of the reasons YA romances hit is because when they’re done well they capture those big feelings we used to have. That’s exactly what we get with Nick and Bree (sorry Sel girlies). The way he shows up for Bree throughout the book with and without her was nothing short of both adorable and admirable.
This book was a bit slow to start, I think it’s like that for every fantasy that’s mid series . But once it gets going, oh my god, it does not stop. And boy does it deliver with the ending. Tracy Deonn is the queen of writing a cliff hanger. I find my daily thoughts slipping back to Bree, Nick, and Sel wondering what ever is going to become of the three of them.
