My Thoughts:
So if you follow me on TikTok you will have likely already caught my less than stellar review of this one. If you loved this book, I would implore you to skip this review. I am not looking to ruin anyone’s good time, but I do want to unpack what I liked, what I didn’t, and why I won’t be continuing with the next 21 books.
Let’s get into it with the first thing I did love about this book. I read it in public, on a train home from DC and the man sitting next to me on the train GOOGLED THE BOOK and was horrified. I have never seen someone squish themselves farther away from their seat buddy or get off a train faster than that dude. As someone who loathes talking to strangers while in any form of transportation I appreciated it’s social repulsion powers. That alone earned it its’ first star.
Star number 2, the smut. The spice is spicing, phew. If you’re looking for an small plot, big thrust kinda energy from your books then this book is definitely for you. Don’t get me wrong I love a spicy book but, personally, I like more plot with a side of spice vs. the other way around.
⚠️Here is where the spoilers will begin. ⚠️
Consent issues. This is just not for me. 39 pages into the book the giant 8ft tall alien is non-consensually going down on the fmc(female main character). Even though the attempted to explain it as “she’s her mate and he was over come”, that’s a hard no for me. I know the rhetoric and conversation has evolved on how to write non-consensual scenes since this came out in 2015 but, even for 10 years ago it seems like a bit much.
The entire plot centering around the fmc getting pregnant, again non consensually. Also not for me. There is a specific line where the fmc eseentially says she doesn’t need birth control because she probably can’t get pregnant anyways all while the mmc (male main character) is literally trying to impregnate her the whole time. Additionally, a main facet of the plot of this book and the series is that the species inhabiting the planet doesn’t have enough women to mate and breed with the current female inhabitants. A freight carrier of human women = a whole new breeding stock for the lonely planet aliens. That feels more dystopian to me than romantic.
The plot was weak, at best. A group of girls is kidnapped from earth by one group of aliens. Those aliens drop them on another planet for “storage” where another species crash landed that doesn’t have enough women? That’s too much coincidence and not enough for almost 300 pages. I can’t imagine how that is spread over the next 21+ books.
Overall I did have fun reading it but, it’s not something I would necessarily recommend to everyone. If you’re here just for the spice, then maybe this blue alien fantasy will be your jam.
